Pada prosesnya selama 300 tahun terus berkembang hingga muncul lensa untuk penggunaan pada teleskop dan mikroskop. Pada abad ke-17, orang-orang berpendapat bahwa tidak bisa sembarang lensa yang bisa digunakan pada camera obscura. Maka dibuatlah lensa convex yang berfungsi untuk menghasilkan gambar yang lebih jelas dan lebih tajam.

Teknik ini dinamakan calotype dan ditemukan pada tahun 1844.Setelah berkembangnya teknik daguerreotype dan calotype, maka muncul inovasi baru yang dikembangkan oleh Frederick Scott Archer pada tahun 1851.
